In most cases, you'll first apply for a "Student Residence Permit" while still in your home country, then use the Visa D to enter Austria and pick up that permit. The Visa D lets you stay, study, and work part-time. It's designed for non-EU citizens who aren't from the European Economic Area or Switzerland.
