About this Visa
The 491 visa lets skilled workers live and work in regional Australia for 5 years. You need a job offer or family sponsorship in a regional area. Once you're here, you can work for any employer in any job (not just your nominated occupation). This visa is your first step to staying permanently in Australia. After 3 years working in a regional area, you can apply for permanent residency (the 191 visa). The visa is active and accepting applications right now.

Eligibility & Requirements
Eligibility Criteria
- Must be under 45 years old
- Must speak English at competent level (IELTS 6.0 minimum)
- Must score at least 65 points
- Occupation must be on skilled occupation list
- Must have positive skills assessment
- No serious criminal history
- No outstanding debts to Australian government
Financial Requirement
No minimum savings or income needed to get the visa. To upgrade to permanent residency later (191 visa), you must earn at least AUD $53,900 per year for 3 separate years while holding the 491 visa.
