About this Visa
This permit lets researchers from outside Europe work on research projects at Hungarian universities and research centers. You get a residence permit to conduct your approved research. You cannot work at other jobs—only your research project counts. It's designed for academics, postdoctoral researchers, and scientists pursuing serious research. This permit allows you to work legally on your research without needing a separate work permit. You can travel freely to 29 European countries visa-free, use the Hungarian healthcare system, and bring your spouse and children. Your time here counts toward permanent residence eligibility after 3 years of continuous stay. Research work is capped at 6 months per year. You can renew the permit for up to 2 additional years. The main requirement is finding an accredited research organization in Hungary to host your project.

Eligibility Criteria
- From outside EU/EEA
- PhD or Master's degree with research experience
- No criminal record
- English acceptable (no Hungarian language required)
- Must have accredited research organization to host you
- Must prove ability to cover living expenses
- Must have health insurance or funds for medical costs
- Must be able to conduct legitimate research
Financial Requirement
Show approximately $8,000-$15,000 per year for living expenses. Your research organization can provide a letter guaranteeing they will cover costs if needed.
