About this Visa

This residence permit is for international students accepted into a university in Latvia. It allows you to live in Latvia while you study for your Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctoral degree. You cannot use this permit just to look for work; you must be an active student first. Once approved, you get a physical card that serves as your ID in Latvia. It lets you travel freely to other Schengen countries for short trips. It also gives you the legal right to work while you study. NOTE: New rules in late 2025 require stricter security checks for many countries.

Key Benefits

  • Travel freely to other Schengen countries for up to 90 days
  • Master's and PhD students can work unlimited hours
  • Bachelor's students can work 20 hours per week
  • Stay 9 months (Master's) or 4 months (Bachelor's) after graduation to find a job
  • Bring spouse and children if you show extra savings
