About this Visa
This visa lets international students study full-time at New Zealand schools, universities, or colleges. You can study any subject for up to 4 years. The visa is open to students from all countries worldwide. This visa is active and accepting applications as of December 2025. All applications must now be made online (no paper applications). Work up to 25 hours per week during school terms, and full-time during school holidays. Bring your spouse or dependent children as they can apply separately with work and study rights.

Eligibility & Requirements
Eligibility Criteria
- Age 10 or older
- Have Offer of Place from approved school
- Have sufficient funds for living expenses and tuition
- No serious criminal record
- No serious communicable diseases
- Must be honest in application
- If 17+ and staying 2+ years: Police clearance from countries where resided 12+ months
- English language requirement varies by institution (typically IELTS 5.0-6.5 or equivalent)
Financial Requirement
NZ$20,000 per year (approximately $11,550 USD) for living expenses, plus full tuition fees for first year. For primary/secondary students: NZ$17,000 per year. Must provide bank statements showing 6+ months of genuine available funds.
